James Weston Humphreys

November 12, 1921 ~ October 30, 2017 (age 95) 95 Years Old


James Weston Humphreys, 95, of Derry, PA, passed away at home on Monday, October 30, 2017 surrounded by family and friends.  He was born on November 12, 1921, to Davis and Twila Brown Humphreys at their home in Derry.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers John D. Humphreys and Robert B. Humphreys, and grandson James McCracken Humphreys.  He is survived by his loving wife  of 72 1/2 years Phyllis McCracken Humphreys, his son Richard and his wife Margaret; granddaughter, Kristin, and her husband, Shao. Two great grandchildren Andy and Elizabeth.

Jim graduated from Derry Borough High School in 1939 and played football under Pat Bucci.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 6, 1942, and served on the USS Battleship Massachusetts and the USS Destroyer Escort Fowler.  His war story is included in the book "An Honor to Serve".  After the war, Jim followed in his father's footsteps and went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad, retiring in 1982.

Jim was active in the community serving on the Derry Borough Council, Judge of Elections, member and Past Master of LaMonte Lodge #568 F&AM  Derry, member of the Shriners, member of Lions Club, a founding member of the Derry Area Historical Society (receiving the 2012 Pomeroy award), and a Cub Scout Leader.  He was also a member of the Chestnut Ridge Dulcimer Players.

 A life long member of the Derry Presbyterian Church  he served as a Church school teacher, Deacon, Elder, and youth leader (leading 5 mission trips).  By congregational acclimation he was not a choir member!

Jim and Phyllis attended many Elderhostels.  He enjoyed gardening, flag collecting, interacting with children, his family, his beloved dogs, Judge Judy, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Bethlen Home Health and Hospice, Dr. Edward Szabo, friends, and Susan (friend and caregiver) who made it possible for him to stay in his home.

A memorial service will be held at the Derry Presbyterian Church on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at 11 am  with a luncheon to follow.  Interment will be made in  Coles Cemetery.

A Masonic service will be conducted at the conclusion of the memorial service in the church.

No flowers please.  Donations may be given to Derry Presbyterian Church or the Derry Area Historical Society.
