Robert A. Johnson Sr.

February 4, 1923 ~ December 6, 2016 (age 93) 93 Years Old


Robert A. “Bob” Johnson Sr., 93 of Derry passed away on December 6, 2016 at Excela Health, Latrobe.

He was born February 4, 1923 in St. Mary’s PA to Carl Hugo and Florence (Hazelton) Johnson.

Bob served in the United States Navy during WWII.  He worked in management for 40 years for the A&P Tea Company. He had been in Latrobe, Derry and Blairsville stores plus more.  He was a charter member of the Derry Area Band Parents, an honorary member of the Derry Volunteer Fire Dept., a member of the Derry Presbyterian Church where he was a session member and clerk of session for 20 years, as well as working with the youth and doing many mission tours, is a current member of the Latrobe American Legion, former member of St. Mary’s Masonic Lodge and Coudersport Consistory, he also was a Derry Ambulance board member.  Bob loved his wife, family, playing bingo, casino trips, travel and flea marketing.

In addition to his parents  he was preceded in death by his  brothers, Carl Hugo Jr. and John W. Johnson. Sister’s; Juanita Gillette, Jane Assalone, Mary Vassallo and his son-in-law A. Franklin Hancock.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, F. Jean Radaker Johnson, whom he married on October 7, 1945 in DuBois, PA, daughter, Carolyn A. Hancock of Kittanning, son, Robert A. Jr. and wife Rhonda, Granddaughters, Colleen Dyche (Chuck) and Kelly Johnson-Hill (Bryan), and Great-Granddaughters, Courtney Kerila and Cali Dyche, brother, Raymond and wife Alice of Farmville, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received Friday from 2-4 and 6-8pm in the McCabe Funeral Home, 300 W. Third Avenue, Derry where a service will be conducted Saturday at 1pm with the Reverend Ronald Durika officiating. Interment will be made in the Coles Cemetery, Derry.

The Latrobe-Derry  Veterans  Honor Guard will conduct a service Saturday at 12:45pm in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to  the Derry Volunteer Fire Department or a charity of one’s choice.
