Stephen G. Smartnick, "Steve" and " Pappy", age 85, went "home" Saturday, April 23, 2016 to join his beloved wife, Marlyn Louise Long Smartnick. They were married on September 6, 1952 at St. Bruno's Roman Catholic Church in South Greensburg. They were married for 48 years when Marlyn passed away on March 26, 1999. He was born on June 13, 1930, in Greensburg, son of the late Anthony and Anna Smartnick.
Steve retired after 45 years' service at the Overly Door Manufacturing Company in Greensburg. Later in life he enjoyed working with his son, Leslie, at his contracting and excavating business in Blairsville. He was one of the founding members for the Forbes Road Volunteer Fire Department and created the design for the red brick "Keystone" on site. He was a long time member of the St. Bruno's Catholic Church, South Greensburg, and attended regularly when they resided in that area. He also was a former member of St Mary's Catholic Church, Forbes Road, where he served on the Holy Name Society for many years. Currently, he is a member of St. Martin's Roman Catholic Church of New Derry.
Steve had a good sense of humor, joking and making silly comments, which all his grandchildren loved. He did handy man work in and around Forbes Road, in addition to his full time job at Overly's. He enjoyed traveling and camping with Marlyn and their children all over the USA. He attended country music shows with his son Barry. Steve and Marlyn visited Branson ten times over the years and fifteen times to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. He was a very kind and generous man and enjoyed being busy and productive.
"Pappy" is survived by Barry S. Smartnick, with whom he resided and was his dedicated caregiver; Pamela Poole (Gary) of Connellsville, Leslie (Kim) Smartnick of Blairsville, Nancy Beer (Jim) of Belle Vernon.
His grandchildren are Dr. Daniel Poole ( Carrie) of Zebulon, NC; Dr. Adam Poole (Tess Nina) of Virginia Beach, VA; Leslie Smartnick II of Irwin, Joshua Poole (Samantha) of Mt. Pleasant; Jason Beer (Stacie) of Pittsburgh, Brandon Beer (Rachel) of Greensburg, Charlotte Powell (Cody) of Grand Prairie, Texas; Kealey Smartnick of Pittsburgh, Stephen his namesake and Marley Louise, Marlyn's namesake of Blairsville. Also, he has six great grandchildren.
Steve has three living brothers; Leonard, Frank, and Bill Smartnick all of Greensburg, and several nieces and nephews.
Barry wishes to acknowledge all of the people who helped with Pappy's in home care over the last few months.
