Vaughn Ross Obituary

Vaughn C. Ross, 89 of New Stanton, passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at his home with his wife at his side.

He was born January 11, 1929 in Blairsville, a son of the late James Eugene and Dorothy Merta Smith Ross.

Vaughn graduated from Derry Boro High School in 1946 and enlisted into the Navy serving over two years. After graduation from IUP he received a commission in the Army where he spent 22 years from 1954-1976 and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He had been stationed or traveled in 38 countries including Viet Nam. After retirement he worked part time as a substitute teacher in local school districts. His favorite past-times were traveling, motor-homing around the country and playing golf with his "church buddies". Vaughn was a member of the Word of Life Church in Greensburg, the VFW Post 444, and past commander of the American Legion in Derry.

He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years Lucille Marie Ross, two daughters, Karen Ross of New Jersey, Janice Scott (Terry), of Connecticut, a son, Keith Ross (Bonnie) of Oklahoma. Step-children; Dr. Lisa Hafer and husband Dr. William Hafer of New Stanton, James Hartz (Tammy) of Ruffsdale, Karen Hartz and Belinda of Coraopolis and Jason Hartz ( Kelly) of Hunker. Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sister-in-law, Rose Ross of Derry, brother-in-law's John Addeo (Barb) of New York and Don Meyer of Kansas. Many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents Vaughn was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathryn Yellenic Ross, a brother Richard Ross and a nephew Rick Ross.

Family and friends will be received Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the McCabe Funeral Home, 300 W. Third Ave. Derry. Additional viewing will be Sunday from 3-4pm at the Word of Life Church, Greensburg where a funeral service will be conducted at 4pm .

Special thank you for Excela Health Hospice nurses, especially Dary Ann and staff for their excellent care of Vaughn.

The Latrobe-Derry Veteran Honor Guard will conduct a service Saturday at 7:45pm in the funeral home.
