Franklyn Herdman Obituary

Franklyn Andrew Herdman was born February 15, 1926, the fourth of seven children of Clarence P. and Mary Wahlrobe Herdman. He lived in Millwood and Derry for most of his life, except for two tours in the U.S. Navy.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, he quit school to volunteer for the military, following his three older brothers. He entered the Navy for World War II, with the majority of his first enlistment as a gunner's mate aboard LSM-141 to land and support the Marines in the invasion of Iwo Jima.

He was discharged from the Navy in 1946 and returned to Derry, where he found limited job opportunities. He married his wife of 68 years Betty L. Thiel (who died August 9, 2015) in 1947.

He again volunteered for the Navy at the start of the Korean War. He was assigned as a section leader of Seaman Guard, and sent to the Phillippines with a Construction Battalion (Sea Bees) to build the Subic Bay Navy Base. He was discharged from the Navy this second time at the end of the Korean War.

Working at Latrobe Steel and in a second job of house construction and repairs, he and his wife raised their four children in Millwood.

He is survived by his sister Mary Jane of Derry, and his four children and their spouses; Frank Herdman with Gloria Madden of Merritt Island, FL, Tom and Debbie Herdman of Spotsylvania, VA, George and Bonnie Herdman of Millwood and Jean and Joe Naeger of Hell-Does-Freeze-Over, Maine.

He has nine grandchildren; Jim, Erik, Dan, David, Mary, Carry Jo, Karen, Jenny and Anna, There are four great grandchildren.

There will be no public services. Frank and Betty Herdman's ashes will be interred in Coles Cemetery, Derry.
