Charles E. Hurt, 81, of Ligonier, died Friday November 29, 2024. He was born June 27, 1943 in Johnstown, a son of the late Orie and Jennie Verba Hurt.
Chuck was a longtime member of the New Florence United Methodist Church and had graduated from Laurel Valley High School in 1961 where he was the most contributing athlete, lettering in three sports. After graduation from high school he graduated from Youngstown State University in 1965 with a BS and had played baseball and stayed in Ohio teaching for two years before coming to Ligonier in 1968 at the Junior High School (coaching basketball) and then the high school where he was the varsity basketball coach.
Chuck received his masters degree from IUP in 1968 and then his principal certificate from Duquense University. For many years he coached Little League, Pony League and Junior League for the Seward VFW where they won the Johnstown Junior League Championship. He was a baseball scout for the Cincinnati Reds for over 50 years, was on the Laurel Valley Hall of Fame nomination committee and finished his educational career as assistant principle at Laurel Valley.
In addition to his parents was preceded in death by his wife Dixie L. Friedline Hurt.
Chuck is survived by his three brothers; Orie Hurt Jr. (Carol) of Royston Georgia, James Leon Hurt (Chris) of Fairview, PA and William R. Hurt (Rochelle) of San Angelo, Texas, brother and sister in law Robert and Sandra Johnson of Ligonier, special friend Karen Erbe of Ligonier, several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Wednesday from 4-7pm in the McCabe Funeral Home, 144 East Main Street, Ligonier. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 11am at the New Florence United Methodist Church. (Everyone is asked to go directly to the church). Interment will follow in the Ligonier Valley Cemetery.
