Denise Purvis Obituary

Denise Ann Purvis passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love and laughter of her family— just the way she would have wanted it. She was 75.  Born on April 15, 1950, in Sheridan, Michigan, to Mary and Harold Grimes, Denise grew up with a deep-rooted love for home, family, and beauty in all forms— a love she carried with her throughout her life.

Denise had a rare gift: the ability to transform a home into a warm and welcoming haven. Her spaces exuded comfort, joy, and her creative spirit. She had a knack for making guests feel like royalty. Her talents in the kitchen were equally remarkable. Denise could whip up a full holiday feast with what appeared to be supernatural grace and ease— chatting and laughing, and somehow keeping everything impeccable. Her gatherings and Christmas parties were legendary, for not only the food, but for the way they brought people together. Denise carried her talents with quiet humility, always more focused on making others feel loved than on being recognized for all that she gave.

Denise’s greatest joy, however, was in loving and caring for her family. She was a devoted wife, a nurturing and endlessly supportive mother, and a proud, doting grandmother. She is survived by her loving and fiercely dedicated husband of 53 years, Kenneth, of Ligonier, PA; her sons Ryan, of Latrobe, PA (and his children Isla, Laird, and Heath), and Lance (Jessica), of Queensbury, NY (and their children Finley and Harper); and her daughter Lauren, of Flourtown, PA (and her daughter Marlowe). Each of them carries forward her generosity of spirit, her creative spark, and her ability to make others feel deeply loved.

Denise is also survived by her siblings: sisters Patricia (Don) Keith, Janis (Rick) Williams, and Mary Deb (Clayton) Rye; and her brother Harold (Sue) Grimes, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Their lifelong bond was a source of strength, laughter, and deeply treasured memories.

Denise and Ken were adventurous travelers who shared a passion for exploring new places, whether it was on snow-covered slopes or sunny beaches. They passed on this love of both the mountains and the beach to their children and grandchildren, who have grown up skiing down snowy peaks and playing in the surf— always embracing the joy of discovery and the beauty of the outdoors.  Animals were drawn to Denise like moths to a flame. Her connection with dogs, in particular, was uncanny— they seemed to sense her gentle, affectionate nature and responded with instant loyalty. Over the years, her multiple beloved pups were lucky enough to enjoy her endless affection.  More than anything, Denise will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, her warm hugs, her brilliant smile, and her infectious laugh. She gave her family a lifetime of love, countless memories of joy, and the comfort of her presence.  She will be deeply missed, and forever cherished.

A private celebration of life will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Beth Luther’s Homeless Pet Fund* or simply taking a moment to cook something special for someone you love— just as Denise would have done.
