George A. Caviggia, 76, of New Derry, died Tuesday March 31, 2026, after a brief illness at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 25, 1949, in Latrobe a son of the late John A. "Gabo" and Helen M. (Poloskey) Caviggia. George was a member of St. Martin Roman Catholic Church in New Derry, was a 1967 graduate of Derry Area High School and then had graduated from Youngstown State University. He had previously worked for the Latrobe Bulletin and retired from Latrobe Brewing. George was a member of the B.P.O.E. #907 Latrobe and was an avid golfer. A devoted friend and family man he was very involved with his grandchildren always attending school and sporting events.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Richard A. "Tank" Caviggia and his wife Janet, a brothers-in-law James A. Joe and Allen Keenan and a sister-in-law Colleen M. Caviggia. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of fifty-five years Cheryl (Joe) Caviggia, his son Jordan Caviggia of Tampa, Florida, daughter Cecily Schmitt and her husband Michael of Latrobe, brothers Retired Colonel John Dennis Caviggia and his wife Sylvia of Palm Coast, Florida, and Anthony P. Caviggia of Buena Park, California, five grandchildren; Chase Broderick, Jaxon Caviggia, Alessia, Talia and Sienna Schmitt, sisters-in-law Judy DiJoseph, Yvonne Slifka and her husband Dave, Michelle Keenan and Ginny Joe, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received Tuesday April 7, 2026, from 2-8 pm in the McCabe Funeral Home, 300 W. Third Avenue, Derry. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday April 8, 2026, at 11 am in the St. Martin Roman Catholic Church, New Derry with the Rev. Father Salvatore Lamendola as celebrant.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
