George Greer, 92 years old, died peacefully at his home in Rector, surrounded by family and dogs on July 26th, 2025.
George, son of Collins and Harriett (Hartwell), was born in Sharon Pennsylvania, where he attended the local public school. He continued his education at The Pennsylvania State University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Upon completing his studies at Penn State he attended law school at the University of Pennsylvania. Before starting his business career he served proudly in the Army in Post World War II Germany. This may have been the beginning of a lifetime love of travel that between business and vacation saw him cover most of the globe. He could find a restaurant or a restroom in several languages and was learning Italian on Duolingo until his last days.
After discharge from the Army he joined the HJ Heinz Company, interviewing with Jack Heinz himself. George went on to work at Heinz for 37 years. He held positions ranging from the legal department, to marketing, including a formative three year stint in England with his young family, ultimately retiring as the Vice President of Organization and Development and taking on the role of Chairman of the Eden Hall Foundation. This last role gave him the platform he needed to have a meaningful impact on Western Pennsylvania - One of the things of which he was most proud.
Throughout George’s life, volunteering in the community was a constant. He took every role on as a meaningful commitment and obligation serving as Chairman of Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania, The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, Fort Ligonier, and Rolling Rock Club, as well as being an active board member of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and Westminster College. George received honorary degrees from Chatham University and Seton Hill University.
George Greer is survived by his wife of sixty years, Jane Gault, two sons, Andrew (Julie) and Stephen (Mei), five grandchildren(Collins, Nori, Hailey, George, Ashley) and two great grandchildren (Eli, Evander). Predeceased by his sister Patricia Bennett and brother Philip Greer.
