George McCullough Obituary

George Rankin McCullough

2/27/29-6/7/24

George enjoyed 95 years of life and slipped away comfortably in the presence of his family, friends and a labrador retriever named "Bugsy". His parents, Hax and Ruth McCullough raised George, his brothers Hax, David and Jimmy on Glen Arden drive in Pittsburgh, Pa. When not in the city, they all spent many years in the family's cottage on Ross Mountain, where George developed his love of the outdoors and all it had to offer.

He attended Shadyside Academy, where  he thrived in sports, especially football. Afterwards, he attended Yale and graduated in 1951 with an engineering degree. He went on to join the Navy and rose to the rank of Lieutenant, while serving on a minesweeper named the "USS Prevail".

George married his first wife, Elizabeth V. Foster and settled down in the East end of Pittsburgh. His in-laws, Dr. and Mrs. George Foster had a home in Ligonier named "Farfields", where he and Betty would spend most of their weekends, away from the trappings of the city.

His love of the outdoors and his adventurous spirit enticed him to join close friends, Arthur Scully, George Wyckoff and Richard Mellon on excursions to British Columbia and Alaska. "Roughing it" in the wilds suited him well- Photography, Hunting and Fishing were paramount endeavors.

He worked for the McCullough Electric company for more than sixty years until the business was sold after one hundred and seven years of operation.

After the divorce of his first wife, George remarried Elisabeth B. Henshaw, with whom he had a most loving relationship that lasted for more than fifty years. They tired of the winters in Pennsylvania and found Kiawah Island , South Carolina to be the haven they were seeking .They built a home there, that became a wonderful retreat for family, friends and especially their dogs. The highlight of the day was taking their golden retrievers to the beach, where the dogs would romp and their owners mingle.

Eventually, George and "Libby" retired in Ligonier, where they enjoyed each other's company and that of many friends and family until it was time to say a final farewell.

George is survived by his son George F. McCullough, stepchildren Betsy Henshaw, John Henshaw and Anne Henshaw, along with their children and grandchildren.

Many Thanks to George's long term caregivers Jackie, Jami, Kathy and Morgan, plus the Hospice care providers Connie and Janis.

George will be laid to rest at St. Michael's Church Cemetery in

Rector, Pa.
