John "Jack" Berger Obituary

John Weller (Jack) Berger died on December 19, 2023 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Latrobe.  Jack, a life-long resident of Ligonier, was born on March 27, 1947 the son of the late John E. and Suzanne (Weller) Berger.

Jack graduated from Ligonier Valley High School in 1965 where he excelled in football and basketball and went on to attend Point Park College in Pittsburgh, majoring in business administration.  Jack became the first 18 year old member of the Ligonier Volunteer Fire Company and worked as a part-time policeman in Ligonier Borough and Ligonier Township.  Jack’s banking career spanned 25 years, holding managerial positions in 6 financial institutions.  A former member of Ligonier Borough Council, he went on to become the Ligonier Borough Office Manager and Secretary/Treasurer, a position he enjoyed until his retirement in 2009.  Jack was a past member of Latrobe Jaycee’s, The American Institute of Banking, Ligonier Chamber of Commerce, Norwin Rotary, Irwin Business and Professional Organization, East Liberty Lions Club, Millvale Rotary, and Johnstown Lions Club.  He was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church, the Ligonier American Legion Post 267, Old Colony Sportsman Club and Latrobe Elks.

Jack enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, golf, hunting, fishing and wintering on the gulf coast of Florida in Port Charlotte.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Karen Suzanne Berger and his brother James Fleming Berger.  Jack is survived by his beloved wife Margaret (Peggy) Berger, two sons:  David (Jenny) Berger of Charlotte NC and Mark (Heather) Berger of Concord NC,  three step-children:  Tad (Cindy) Harbert of Seven Valleys PA, Pamela (Robert) Gregory of Seattle WA and Brent Harbert of Ligonier, nine grandchildren:  Jack and Liam Berger, Michaela and Grayson Berger, Lexie Harbert, Griffin Gregory and Ryan, Joshua, and Libby Harbert, one sister-in-law Pam Berger of Ligonier and special niece and nephew Trudy Marinchak and John Berger.

Friends will be received Wednesday December 27, 2023 from 2-4 and 6-7:30pm in the McCabe Funeral Home, 144 East Main Street, Ligonier, where his service will be conducted at 7:30pm with the Rev. Dr. J. Paul McCracken officiating. Private interment will be made in the Ligonier Valley Cemetery.
