Sandi Richter Obituary

Sandi Harris Richter of Ligonier, PA, passed away on March 2, 2025, after a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by family.

Born on August 27, 1955, in Cape May County, New Jersey, Sandi was the beloved daughter of Laura Mae and George Harris. She often reminisced about her childhood at the Jersey Shore, cherishing memories of summers spent by the ocean. One of her early jobs included trudging through the sand to check beach tags in Stone Harbor.

Sandi’s love for music was evident from a young age. A talented clarinetist, saxophonist, and pianist, she was invited to play with the Middle Township High School Marching Band while still in seventh grade. She remained active in the band throughout her school years and was also a dedicated member of the dance band.

Upon graduating from Middle Township High School in 1973, Sandi pursued a degree in education at West Chester University. It was there that she met Scott, and together they created countless fond memories, forming a connection that would stand the test of time. After college, their paths diverged—Scott moved to Western Pennsylvania to begin his career, while Sandi returned to South Jersey. She spent the next decade teaching middle school science from 1977 to 1987. In 1987, fate brought Sandi and Scott back together, and she moved to Western Pennsylvania to begin the next chapter of her life.

Sandi had a passion for helping others. She played an influential role in supporting the Plain families of Brush Valley in Indiana County, recognizing a need for affordable children’s items. In response, she opened a nonprofit secondhand clothing and toy store, ensuring families had access to black shoes and appropriate attire.

She had her unique way of doing things, and it worked. She approached every endeavor with care and attention. When Sandi liked something, she didn’t just like it—she loved it. She was loyal in her relationships, her commitments, and even her shopping routine.

Sandi cherished her daily interactions with merchants and store clerks in Ligonier. If you shared something with her, she remembered it. She was a great listener, and her quick wit and humor could light up any room. She had the ability to make everyone feel included.

Sandi leaves behind family and friends who were lucky enough to know her, love her, and experience her well-aimed sarcasm and unwavering support. Though her absence is deeply felt, her stories, one-liners, and invaluable advice will live on in those who loved her.

Sandi is survived by her husband Scott Richter of Ligonier, PA, stepdaughter, Jane Richter Swartz wife of Kyle Swartz, granddaughter Lydia Swartz of Lancaster, PA and brother-in-law Bruce Richter partner of Ed Curley of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

A gathering to celebrate Sandi’s life will be held later this spring. Details will be shared with family and friends in the coming months.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you tell someone you love them, laugh a little louder, and show up for the people who matter.  A special thank you to the ICU staff at Latrobe Hospital for their care, compassion and love during Sandi’s final days. Our family, and Sandi, are forever grateful.
