Stanley R. "Stan" Akins, 90, of Latrobe, formerly of Derry, passed peacefully February 11, 2025 at Brookdale Senior Living, Latrobe. He was born September 21, 1934, in Derry, PA, a son of the late Andrew P. and Eleanor (Schrum) Akins.
Stan was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Latrobe, its Holy Name Society and Men's Bible Study Group. During his retirement, he worked tirelessly to create and maintain many of the mini-gardens throughout Latrobe. He was well known for his gardening skills, particularly his dahlias and tomatoes.
Prior to his retirement in 1993, Stan had 37 years of service at the Derry Area School District as a teacher, school psychologist, and administrator, including 12 years coaching football.
He was a graduate of Derry Borough High School and St. Vincent College, where he played football for the "Bearcats". He was a proud member of the St. Vincent Alumni Association, who honored him with a Letterman of Distinction Award in 1990. He received his Master's Degree and PA State Certification as School Psychologist from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Stan served active duty in the US Army, 2nd Armored Cavalry Tank Battalion from 1957 - 59.
The youngest of 11 children, Stan was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary Loretta and Mary Fidelis, E. Marie (James) Watson, Mary Bernadette (James) Marshall, Catherine Ann (Thomas) Beggs, Janet (Donald) McGuire, brothers Francis (Garnett), Hugh, Gerald, and Charles Akins.
Stan is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Joan (Thomas) Akins, sons Brian (Kathy) of Houston, TX, and Eric (Ami Jo) of Derry; grandchildren Meghan (Ryan) Osborne, Emily (Brendan) Agans, Cameron, Anna, great-grandson Hughes Agans, sisters-in-law JoAnne and Nira (Nancy) Akins, and nieces and nephews too numerous to count.
The family extends its gratitude to Brookdale Senior Living and Bridges Hospice for their comforting and loving care.

Friends will be received Friday February 28 from 4-7 pm in the McCabe Funeral Home, 300 W. Third Avenue, Derry. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday March 1st at 11am at Holy Family Church, Latrobe. Stan will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Church Cemetery, Derry.
The Holy Family Men's Fellowship and Holy Name Society will recite the rosary Friday at 3:45 pm in the funeral home. The Latrobe-Derry Veterans Honor Guard will present a service at 6:45 pm Friday in the funeral home.
