Virginia "Ginny" Frank Johnson, 66, passed away Wednesday July 29, 2026 at her home in Ligonier, PA. She was born March 22, 1960 in Newark, NJ eldest daughter of the late MSG (Ret.) Martin S. and Kathleen (Stein) Frank.
She graduated in 1984 from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She had a 30-year career as a Registered Nurse serving many communities across the country wherever her husband Chuck was stationed. A home health nurse, head nurse at nursing homes, and volunteer for hurricane relief were some of the highlights of her career.
Virginia was a devoted Air Force wife and mother, raising a family through the many transitions of military life. Always dedicated and active in her community through various volunteer organizations, she was essential in scouting, military family support, and the Officers Spouses Club.
Upon moving to Ligonier, she became an active member of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church and its activities as well as supporting the Air Force Junior ROTC at Ligonier High School. Virginia was an avid quilter and belonged to the Heart & Hands Quilt Guild in Scottdale. The quilts she made and shared, and the quilters she encouraged and mentored will live on in every community she touched.
She is survived by her loving husband of forty-two years Col. (Ret.) Charles D. Johnson, her children Amanda F. J. Cox (and her husband Tyler F. Cox) of Odenton, MD, and Carl W. Johnson (and his wife Dr. Kate E. Johnson) of Friendswood, TX. Her siblings Deborah Krestar (and her husband Bruce Krestar) of Altoona, PA, Margaret Matkoskey (and her husband Paul Matkoskey) of Somerset, PA, and her brother Joseph Frank of Albuquerque, NM, along with numerous nieces and nephews all mourn her passing.
Friends will be received Thursday August 6, 2026 at the McCabe Funeral Home, 144 East Main Street Ligonier from 4-7 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday August 7, 2026 at 10 am at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church of Ligonier with Father Anthony Carbone as celebrant.
Interment will be made in the Scottdale Cemetery.
