William C. Downs

William C. Downs, 95, of Pikesville, Maryland (formerly of Ligonier) died peacefully Tuesday August 8, 2023 at home. He was born March 5, 1928 in Mount Pleasant a son of the late William and Vera Bickle Downs.
Bill was a US Navy Veteran and had been a long time member of Heritage Methodist Church. He was the former director of the Central Westmoreland Area Technical School, had been a long time member of the Ligonier Rotary Club,
was a professor at IUP, an avid woodworker and photographer. Family was the most important thing to him as he always was a loving father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Gilda R. Kamerer Downs, and his two sisters; Edith Dunn and Janet Dorey.
He is survived by his children; Deborah Lynch (John) of Pikesville, MD whom he had been living with, sons; William S. Downs (Elaine) of Tallahasse, FL, Scott Downs (Carole) of New Stanton, and Terry L. Downs (Deborah) of Pittsburgh,
six grandchildren; Erica Harkins, Amber Zook, Brent Leidy, Kristina Rudick, Todd Downs and Ashley Cumber, several great grandchildren.
Friends will be received Monday from 4-8pm in the McCabe Funeral Home, 144 East Main Street, Ligonier.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 11am in the Heritage Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ronald Geisler officiating. (Everyone is asked to go directly to the church) Interment will be made in the Ligonier Valley Cemetery with the South Greensburg American Legion Post #981 according military honors.
